What's the Dirt on Margaret River?
What's the Dirt on Margaret River?
A discourse on the major soil types of the region and why the're important to the wine in the glass.
My background in soil science is extensive, as is my experience with the soils of the Margaret River wine region. I was the Prinicpal Author on the GWRDC's regional project which surveyed and classified vineyarded soils (as well as Climate and Viticultural practices) across the region. This involved digging over 200 soil pits 500mm out from the vine trunk and analysing samples from each soil horizon. This gave me an intimate understanding of the physical and chemical properties of Margaret River soils. I am also Chair of the Margaret River Wine Association's Technical Sub-committee and a major contributor to the regional media kit which is the most compelling and comprehensive treatise on all aspects of the region.
I love teaching people about the unique qualities of our soils, how they impact on wine and the best way to "talk dirt" to customers...
